The story is set in the Heian Period, when evil spirits ran wild in the ancient capital of Heiankyo. Abeno Masahiro is the youngest grandson of Abeno Seimei, a prestigious onmyoji protecting people from evil. The story depicts how the inexperienced 13-year-old overcomes challenges to become a qualified onmyoji. The novel series is a mega-hit and has already sold 5.5 million copies. Heiankyo, which Masahiro and his supernatural partner Mokkun protect with their lives, is now the city of Kyoto in Kyoto Prefecture. A number of locations depicted in the anime do exist in real-life, such as the Kifune Shrine, which is still open to the public, the ruins of bygone Onmyoryo, and Lake Ogura.

Seimei Shrine is dedicated to the legendary onmyoji, Abeno Seimei, portrayed as the grandfather of Masahiro in the title. The torii gate at the entrance facing Horikawa Street, with the pentagram "Seimei Bellflower Seal", is the symbol of the shrine. On the way to the main hall, located in the deepest part of the shrine, visitors will pass the former Ichijo Modori bridge (rebuilt in front of the current one), a stone statue of Shikigami, and information boards that detail the accomplishments of Seimei -- attractions that fans will surely want to take time to explore. In addition, the nearby Nishijin Textile Center features kimono fashion shows and offers a kimono rental service; it is definitely worth a visit.
