“Initial D” is the extremely popular comic series written by Shuichi Shigeno which was serialized in Young Magazine (published by Kodansha) from 1995 to July 2013 and sold 56 million copies in total. The anime film trilogy adapted from the comic series follows the intense battles of the Takahashi brothers and Takumi, who all aim to be “the fastest on public roads.”

“Street racers”, based in a mountainous region of Gunma, compete fiercely in driving techniques on winding passes in the mountains.

Takumi Fujiwara helps his family’s tofu shop as a delivery man. He has acquired outstanding driving techniques through driving a Toyota Sprinter Trueno, AE86, to deliver tofu to customers through a mountain pass every day. One day, Takumi, on his way to a customer, effortlessly passes the vehicle of Keisuke Takahashi, the second in a local street racing team, which attracts the attention of street racers although Takumi does not realize it.
Shortly afterward, the members of the “Akagi RedSuns” led by Ryosuke Takahashi, the older brother of Keisuke, gather at Mt. Akina, and challenge the “Akina SpeedStars” led by Koichiro Iketani to a racing match by naming the driver of AE 86 on that day as an opponent. Koichiro had witnessed the AE 86 which passed the vehicle of Keisuke. Knowing that Takumi’s father, Bunta Fujiwara, was previously known as “the fastest street racer on Mt. Akina,” Koichiro asks Takumi to join the match. But, on the day of the match, the person who appears in front of Koichiro and Keisuke is…!?

This new anime film is renowned for the pioneering use of 3D computer graphics in its racing battle scenes, and the high level of real-world reproduction, for example, engine noise from actual running vehicles.

“With Magari around, I feel like going to school. I wonder what you call a relationship like this.”

Ganta Nakami, a high school boy suffering from insomnia, sneaks out of class during the preparation for a school festival and meets Isaki Magari, who also has insomnia, in the school’s abandoned astronomical observatory. They begin spending time together in the observatory, which becomes their shared sanctuary.

A team of young staff adapted the anime from the original work by Makoto Ojiro, a leading figure in coming-of-age stories.

Hitomi Tsukishiro, a descendant of a clan of witches, lost her color vision at an early age and developed problems expressing her emotions. One day, when she was seventeen, a magic trick by her grandma, Kohaku, sent her back to 2018, 60 years before the time this story began. When Hitomi came back to herself, she found herself in the room of Yuito Aoi, a student of Minamigaoka High School. Hitomi noticed a painting made by Yuito, and for a moment her color vision was restored. Soon she met with her grandma, Kohaku, who was now 60 years younger. As she spent her days at the high school with Yuito, Kohaku, and others, Hitomi discovered some thoughts that were very important.

IKKYU-SAN

This period anime is based on the childhood of Ikkyu Sojun, the Zen Buddhist monk who was also the prince of Emperor Gokomatsu in the Muromachi period. Separated from his mother, Sengikumaru begins his spiritual practice at Ankoku Temple, where he becomes a monk. He is then given the name of Ikkyu, and helps to solve all kinds of problems with his intelligence and wit. The anime was not only well-received by children and parents in Japan during the Showa era, it was also popular in China. The teru teru bozu talisman that comforts Ikkyu in place of his faraway mother, also steal the spotlight with its rich facial expressions.

ISHINOMORI MANGA MUSEUM

Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, is known as a place associated closely with Shotaro Ishinomori, creator of many comic masterpieces like “Masked Rider” and “Cyborg 009.” The plan to build this museum emerged out of a talk between the comic artist and the then Mayor of Ishinomaki back in 1995. Their intention was to help the city thrive. Ishinomori created the original draft for the architecture. Though the disastrous earthquake and tsunami of 2011 brought serious damage to the museum, it reopened in November 2012, thanks to great help from numerous volunteers. Inside the museum, the permanent exhibits include 3D objects and 2D videos to depict Ishinomori’s creation. The museum also houses a movie hall and a library with some 6,000 comic books available for visitors to read. The museum store carries many items available only here.
