Selection Criteria for Anime Tourism 88

We are introducing the content of the selection criteria

Japanese Anime 88-Spots (2019 Edition)
Over the three months from June 1st through August 31st, 2018, we conducted a web poll of Japan’s Anime spot with fans of Japanese anime worldwide. Based on the poll’s results, and with the consent of the relevant content owners, we, the Anime Tourism Association, had many talks with relevant municipalities and others to choose and announce, in October 2018, “Japanese Anime 88-Spots (2019 Edition)”. Japanese Anime 88-Spots (2019 Edition), are chosen from not just spots featured in the latest animations and classic anime works, but from other places many anime fans want to visit for fun, such as memorial museums of renowned anime masters and other anime-related museums, facilities related to anime characters, and so on.

Selection criteria
We, the Association, select the 88 Anime spot each year, in accordance with the selection criteria below:
1 The selection of “Japanese Anime 88-Spots” shall be made by the Association’s Secretariat in consultation with the relevant content owners and municipalities, based on the results of a poll conducted with anime fans both in Japan and abroad. The Secretariat’s selection shall be reviewed further from a comprehensive perspective by the Association’s Board of Directors, who will finalize the selection.
2 To qualify as a candidate for “Japanese Anime 88-Spots”, a spot needs to be recognized by many anime fans as a venue and/or model of an anime work. The same goes for candidate facilities and events as well.
3 A selected spot and the corresponding anime work must be capable of real development by means of anime tourism. Also, the relevant content owner(s) and municipality (-ties) need to consent to such development.
4 Though the candidates are primarily video works, the Association shall have some liberty to select non-video works as well, according to the owners’ intentions and the support of fans.
5 The Association shall not number or rank the candidates, since this selection has no intention to indicate which candidates are better than others.
6  “Japanese Anime 88-Spots” shall be updated each year. The annual selection will be announced by the end of each year. Activities in response to the selection shall take place throughout the following year.

In addition, the Association will install “Fudasho Stops”, facilities that communicate information on selected “Japanese Anime 88-Spots (2019 Edition)”, to attract more visitors to them.
