The stage of the second episode, “Cosmonaut”, is set in Kagoshima, the location of Takaki’s transfer school. The place where Sumida Kanae, who has a crush on Takaki, practiced surfing is the Nakayama coast of Tanegashima Island. A beautiful beach with fine-grained sand, it has strong and tall waves, attracting many surfers. This beach is actually a little-known ideal spot to watch rocket launches, so it often becomes crowded during launch periods. Of course, there are many beaches besides Nakayama coast; many people come to the ocean here to dive, fish, and kayak. During egg-laying season for sea turtles, observation sessions are held offer a close look at this process.
