Mizuki Manga’s birthplace

Mizuki Shigeru is one of Japan’s leading manga artists. He lived in Chofu City, Tokyo for over 50 years until his death in November 2015, and there are many spots related to “GeGeGe no Kitaro“. Tenjin-dori Shopping Street, which runs from the central exit of Chofu Station on the Keio Line to the north and continues from the old Koshu Kaido to the approach to Fuda Tenjinsha Shrine, is lined with monuments and illustrations of Kitaro, Nezumi-Otoko and others. In addition, at “Kitaro Chaya”, which reopened in November 2024 in the same shopping street, you can take out yokai menus and purchase Kitaro goods. In May 2019, using crowdfunding, “Kitaro Square” was opened, which features objects and playground equipment such as a Kitaro statue, the Nurikabe climbing wall, Ittan-Momen bench, Kitaro’s house slide, and Kappa’s Sanpei Pond (installed in 2021).
